Mirrors carry great importance in a hair salon. Naturally, their main function is to reflect customers' images back as a before and after for the salon service. However, salons should be stylish environments too, and such an important element such as mirrors must fit in with that style. So if you're getting ready to outfit a new salon, pay special attention to your mirrors.
When clients walk into your salon, you want them to get an impression of your business. At minimum, they'll see as many mirrors as they do hair stylists. So, you want to choose mirrors that make a good impression.
Of course, the foundation of the mirror is just glass with a reflective coating. While a plain rectangle might work in a super-minimalist setting, you're more likely to get an attractive effect with a frame or specialized edging. Think about the ambience you want to convey. If it's modern, consider simple frames for geometric mirrors. Go ornamented if you want a glamorous appeal.
If you do opt for a plainer mirror, consider incorporating your salon logo into the design. You still want the mirror to promote your business or brand.
Another big choice you'll make in mirrors is their size. Obviously, they have to be big enough for clients to see their hair. Keep in mind, people range in height, and you want mirrors big enough to offer reflections for both tall and short clients.
The other consideration for mirror sizing is the size of your space. Even though mirrors are so important to a salon business, you want them to be in proportion with the rest of your space. Keep this fact in mind especially if you're choosing visually heavy frames.
You want stylist mirrors to flatter both the client and the shop. Speaking to the first consideration, remember clients are going to be sitting in the stylist chair for some time. Is it more effective for them to get a full-length view of themselves and everyone behind them? Consider placing mirrors so clients can escape the reflection at least partially -perhaps at an angle to the chair.
Speaking to the second consideration, the reflective qualities of mirrors can also flatter your salon. They can lighten up dim areas and also make a small space look larger. Experiment with placement so that the reflections are also attractive. For instance, if you have attractive lighting fixtures, try to capture them in the mirrors.
Another area where you might incorporate mirrors is the foyer. A mirror near the entrance can be another version of the before and after service; your clients will get a glimpse of themselves when they first arrive and also with their improved appearance after their hair service.
Additionally, you probably will want to sell hair products to your clients, and you'll need displays up front. Consider mirroring the area behind the product shelves. The mirror will reflect the light onto the products, which makes them seem even more on display.
Speaking of light, you'll want your light placement to be deliberate in regards to your mirrors. So, if you're using mirrored product displays, you might also incorporate LED lighting into your shelving. Again, the purpose is to draw your clients' attention to your retail products and, literally, put the items in their best light.
Concerning the stylist stations, task lighting is paramount. Keep in mind a bright overhead light might not be flattering even if it provides a clear light for your stylists' work. Consider instead installing lights around the mirror itself - imagine what you'd expect to see backstage at a show. Such lighting is more flattering for your clients.
